Managing Editor, Switchback Travel

The Managing Editor, Switchback Travel establishes review methodology, manages the editorial calendar, and assigns, writes and edits publication-eady content that informs and engages readers and catalyzes purchase behavior. This role is explicitly responsible for monitoring and growing affiliate revenue while maintaining journalistic integrity. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position. Compensation will be based on skills, experience and location.

Responsibilities

  • Manage editorial calendar for publication, including moving edits through to publishing, assigning editors, coordinating content flow
  • Manage large portfolio of diverse buyer’s guides, including updating existing content regularly and adding high-performing guides in new categories
  • Manage gear testing and photography processes including obtaining, assigning and returning gear
  • Demonstrate subject matter expertise in multiple core and expansive categories including Camp, Hike, Backpacking and Travel
  • Recruit, train and manage other editors and freelance writers to execute editorial calendar
  • Write and edit publication-ready content, including creating/coordinating visuals
  • Practice SEO and SEM optimization
  • Use tools including data from affiliate networks, Google Analytics, Accuranker, etc. to monitor and improve key metrics including search rankings, affiliate revenue, traffic, etc.
  • Adopt strategic mindset; study industry trends and opportunities; establish approaches to leverage strengths and close gaps
  • Help manage team morale and workflow to emphasize team satisfaction and dynamic
  • Serve as an ambassador while attending industry events, press trips, and trade shows

 

Requirements

  • 5+ years of editorial experience, preferably in digital publications with affiliate and search engine marketing
  • Passion for the outdoor active lifestyle
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and project management skills
  • Familiarity with digital publishing tools, content management systems and affiliate networks
  • Comfort reporting, analyzing, and interpreting data to drive decisions
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or related field (preferred)
